Psychopaths in Novels
Featured Author: Robin Roughley
Rob Roughley lives in the North West of England - God's coal bunker, the land of the wedding cake made by placing three meat pies on top of one another and whippets on lengths of string. His novels are set between the run down streets of a northern town and the beautiful yet desolate west Pennine moors.
He is a prolific author heading towards his twentieth novel, and his most popular series of crime/thriller novels features Detective Sergeant Lasser. Recently, he has started a new thriller series in August 2017, featuring a psychopath from his Lasser series - Plymouth. |
If you love your crime fiction crammed with square jawed heroes driving flash cars and glorious women who shimmer with inner light, then the DS Lasser novels are not for you.
However, if you prefer your characters to be flawed, with a sprinkling of dandruff and old acne scars, the plots to be laced with dark humour, then give them a try.

Though Plymouth is playing a deadlier game. One in which he is putting his life in the crosshairs in order to bring the guilty forward and he will stop at nothing to inflict his own horrific brand of retribution. However, as Mathews draws closer to his quarry he is forced to question the truth about the man with the blue eyes and savage smile. There are others who will cross any line to kill Plymouth those who have suffered beyond imagining at his hands. |
As the noose tightens and people start to die, Mathews must decide who he can trust before the clock stops ticking.

Rob's comments on Stormcock, The First Plymouth Series Novel:
Some see the man named Plymouth as nothing but a cold-bloodied killer, a man who can take a life in the blink of an eye and then walk away with the friendly smile in place and a spring in his step. For others, he can be a saviour, an anti-hero who has saved them from certain death. One thing is certain, for those he leaves alive are left under no illusion - they have never met a man like Plymouth before and if there is a god in heaven then they will never meet him again.
Plymouth, the man who has a moral compass as skewed as his white hair is straight. His idea of justice isn't one you will find in any court. But maybe it should be? He can silently track and kill without apparent conscience, he is a killer after all and what does he need a conscience for? He kills using any method or implement he has to hand, be it a knife, a gun or even a Dyson cleaner. As long as the end is achieved, the means don't matter.
So, who is this man who silently kills, leaving no clues, no evidence behind?
Of course, rumours exist, some say he hates bad language and always likes to let people know the consequences will be dire if they fail to heed his warning. Others talk of him as the bogeyman, someone who instils terror beyond belief, someone who has the knack for killing, a skill set that prepares him for an eventuality. Many have failed to see the truth until it is too late, so it is impossible to ask them their opinions on the man named Plymouth.
Those who have survived talk of a bright, warm smile that belies the killer glint in his piercing, blue eyes. Some will say he is the salt of the earth, others are immediately disgusted by his presence as if they can see beyond the façade and what they see leaves them shaking with a fear so acute that it leaves them speechless.
DS Lasser has seen it first hand and knows the truth. Plymouth can smile even when he is ending a life in the most vicious of ways but he can also save a life with the same smile locked in place.
For Lasser and Plymouth are intrinsically linked, their paths are destined to cross more than once and whenever Plymouth surfaces then Lasser knows that people will die… and die badly.
Sometimes, Lasser in his deepest imaginings will admit to himself that some of the white-haired killer's targets deserved to die. After all, haven't they themselves killed, haven't they spread misery and heartache with their drugs and violence?
Plymouth is everything that a man like Lasser should hate, cold, calculating and without a shred of remorse for the terrible things he does. Yet Plymouth has saved the taciturn detective on more than one occasion and if there is one thing Lasser hates then it is to be in anyone's debt.
